We call Gabriela Jauregui “Chicken Legs” because last time she was in New York she was listening to a bunch of Puerto Rican girls argue. She was fascinated by the way they spoke Spanish and was mentally comparing it to the way she speaks her native tongue back in Mexico City. As she pondered this with a wry smile, one of the young ladies stops arguing with her friend, looks over at Gabriela and, instead of sparking up a discussion on Spanish linguistics and how various accents come to be, said, “What the fuck are you looking at Chicken Legs?” And so, a life long nickname was born. Some people don’t even know her as Gabriela.
Chicken Legs will be reading from her new book of poetry tonight called “Controlled Decay” at Bluestockings, 172 Allen St between Stanton and Rivington at 7 PM. Here’s a sample…
