  1. And, er, the Devil doesn’t win in the end of The Exorcist. Father Damian did his duty and gave up his life so the girl can be un-possessed and live a normal life.

As a martyr, we can assume (although not know for certain) that he entered Heaven immediately.

I guess if you’re Protestant, that’s “losing” or something :-)

Father Damian traded his soul for Regan’s to be eternally in hell.

  5. Nope, the Devil has no power to send people to hell. His powers are quite limited actually compared to God’s (he’s an angel, not a deity.)

And souls cannot be traded like baseball cards.

He volunteered to take on Regan’s suffering and the demon obliged. Then Damian died at which point he presumably a) went to purgatory where he will spend much less time due to the “points” he gets for sacrificing himself for a child or b) was ushered directly into the presence of God.

People send themselves to hell. God allows them to do so and the Devil is merely the landlord.

Damian did nothing to merit that punishment.

Even if Regan remained possessed until the end of her life, nothing she says or does no matter how evil is a sin because her free will has been hijacked by the demon. She is not in her right mind and cannot control herself. She was never in danger of going to hell, just of suffering terribly.

I don’t know that The Exorcist is meant to be theologically correct or that Protestantism has any such belief that being a martyr for God is “losing”.

Well, whoever wrote the comic seems to agree with me when they say that the devil won in the end, meaning he got a nice juicy soul to feast on until Jesus returns to Earth and sets things right. The movie wouldn’t be nearly as scary if the torment ended with dying.

Had a chance 9 years ago to sit down and read them all. These comics are great
